i LOVE Rattman yes he’s just so well executed cause like you said, Chell really doesn’t know anythign about him while you’re going OH GOODDDDD

He’s been selfless and helpful and was the reason the first game even happened and I think they really made a great decision in not just having “look behind the panels there’s a room of crazy” but then pinning down all the crazy into one person you can eventually identify with a lot. So it’s incredibly creepy at first (as tired as the phrase is I’ll never forget the moment I found the cake is a lie room and how the music just freaked me the fuck out) but then the scrawlings start helping you and then it turns out it was just this poor guy

So it hits both the SHIT THAT’S FUCKED UP vibe but even better than that is sympathy for someone who honestly deserves it but might be too far gone by now. You can see how he’d end up painting murals of Chell, since he did it to pass the time, and he seemed to like making art, and she was his only hope in a lot of situations. It IS really creepy and it’d be way creepier to her when she sees them, but you know why he’s like that and you just feel sorry for him

He’s such a great literally background character with a lot of importance but shoved aside out of the main spotlight which makes you think he doesn’t want to be known about, like he’s so guilty over being implicit in the facility from the start, he just wants to hide away in holes and never be seen again.

And I was hoping he could be there at the end to escape with Chell, having redeemed himself and she could finally meet another person - even if she did meet another person I think she’d feel very alone without anyone to relate to about what she went through. The two of them could’ve finally had some consolation about all the trauma and they’d probably be the only people that understood each other, and then help each other get back to normal in the big open world, and I especially wanted this since they’d never actually MET, and I think a lot of players actually wanted to MEET the crazy guy leaving the writing behind once you realised he was guiding you, years ago. Weh weh why did he sacrifice himself weh.

Anyway the achievement you’re talking about is in the “smelly garbage” room

I kinda disagree with the word of god about Chell’s being disinclined to talk - they said that was their personal idea for it, because that was pretty funny, but they didn’t say it like it was a definitive answer. I don’t think they meant they have any particular reason in mind canonically.

And my personal idea on Chell’s speech would be that she speaks like a child. She was captured on Bring Your Daughter To Work Day and then possibly left in stasis until adulthood? She’s missed a huge chunk of social and verbal development. My best guess is that she’d use very very basic terms and would be in a state of surprise at the tone of her own voice.

So she can probably be a lot more aggressive in response to insane robots constantly trying to control her life by not speaking at all. She wouldn’t be able to articulate a good insult back because she’s never been able to learn linguistic gymnastics. Besides, we know she can get by perfectly fine without needing to speak, which might be the only empowering thing keeping her going. She doesn’t need to acknowledge GLaDOS with a response and she doesn’t need to validate Wheatley’s existence by telling him what she’s doing.

Haha, I’m caught between ‘Does not give a fuck’ Chell who is a strong woman who don’t need no words, and childminded Chell who doesn’t understand why she has to be there or why the computer keeps on making fun of her and she just wants her parents back but the computer lied about that too, and she’s always staying quiet and taking it and trying not to cry and oh god how did I get here I am not good with porbal gun
