Warning there’s a long Once-ler rant in here don’t say i didn’t warn you
GOD IT REALLY ANNOYS ME WHEN PEOPLE PORTRAY THE ONCE-LER AS A DOMINANT PERSON.
Because that is one thing that totally destroys the personality they set up more than any other.
He’s a fucking pushover. He endures verbal abuse from his close family. He had tomatoes thrown at him in public, routinely. He had his guitar, possibly his most prized possession, smashed by a little girl. He couldn’t hold his own against a furry forest creature. He screamed when he was attacked by a baby teddy bear. He’s at the goddamn bottom of the status ladder.
If he has one defining personality characteristic above all others it’s probably this one. He’s PATHETIC.
That does not magically change when he gets his cold, hard validation. He has a damaged outlook. He’s only capable of associating self-worth with monetary worth. That’s what’s been ingrained in him. He didn’t get any more confident than he was before - he’s always been an asshole to anyone he thought was ‘beneath’ him. He just suddenly has a lot more ways to be an asshole.
The only time he really interacts with anybody in that state, he’s bullying the Lorax down a flight of fairly hazardous stairs. Didn’t anybody teach you “Doth Protest Too Much 101”? That’s not confidence, it’s the absence of it. Confident people stay quiet, if they have true conviction in themselves they don’t NEED to say anything or do anything of explain themselves. Ranting like that is a sign of weakness. He’s more like a mouse trapped in a corner, and the cat is his own guilt, and all he’s doing is a show of desperation. His story ends badly because he never manages to grow any confidence. If he had done, he would’ve been able to tell his family to shove it and let him work under his own conditions, but he’s a pushover, so he went with the easier option of steamrolling innocent creatures. If he’d been a hero, instead of an anti-hero, he would’ve realised his weakness and struggled to overcome it, but he didn’t. That was the POINT of the whole story, that he lives and grows old a snarking, fiscally-minded doormat who chose to inflate his sense of entitlement with empty money and hide his failure of a personality deep inside a cloud of success rather than commit to self-improvement. He starts off pathetic and oblivious, at the end he’s pathetic and resigned, and in the middle he’s pathetic and trying to mask it all with material things that can’t actually make him a better person. So, basically, the most pathetic of all three. He spends an awful lot of money to hide the fact he’s still a spineless dweeb even though he’s never changed from the prancing, singing idiot who tried to shield himself from a bear attack with marshmallows.
SO, NO, I DON’T THINK HE’S GOING TO BE A SUAVE, DIRTY-TALKING, CONTROLLING, DOMINANT CONNOISSEUR OF ROUGH SEX.
And this goes for the young, weepy, blushing, submissive version of himself too. He acts like a normal fucking person, not a yaoi stereotype.
